The Fury of All Furies

It was a headline on one of the dailies here about the Northern Marianas College Board of Regents member resigning from her post after six long years. However, the reason was not disclosed.

Hmmm...If I said again, this "we heard" this might label us a rumor mongering blog. (People, should we decide to be the next Sun or Enquirer, or Defamer.Com or TMZ.com with this blog, it's none of your GDB.)

So here I go again. Sources said the reason why this regent stepped down is because the college did not renew her husband's teaching contract. We were told that the reason for the college not renewing the contract of this teacher was because of alleged frequently being caught intoxicated inside the campus and in class. Should this be the case, the teacher didn't realize that "hell hath no fury!"

Call it gossip all you want, just sharing this info we got....

Both John and Eloise are good people. John did more for the science, ecology and biology programs out here, than any single other teacher I can think of.

again, this drinking thing is alleged as told by the reliable source....how reliable? don't even bother to ask...

Anonymous said...

i've known him as well to be an advocate of excellent science education on Saipan. too bad his marine center has not gotten much attention. now this...sad....

Yes john is a nice guy, but he has issues with his drinking. In fact, he got arrested for DUI, plead guilty and did community service.

He is however, a good biology teacher and it was sad that Carmen Fernandez did not renew his contract.

By the way, Eloise did not resign because her husband's contract with the college did not get renewed; she resigned because she cannot stand the management style of that dumb ass Carmen Fernadez.

I am sure Dekada Shyster is at fault here somehow.

whats wrong with a few brewskies before analyzing molecules..

Angelo Villagomez said...

How did Mr. Woodruff come to be called the "Dekada Shyster?"

As for this post, it is not difficult to find out who the author is. Most of us know you.

I think insinuating that John was drunk on the job is defamation (libel) in the worst way.

I hope you have a good lawyer.

i'd say it's unsubstantiated, but i still like the blog. it's juicy! this is the home of gossip, but why not be proud of it? is that a negative thing to say? i think it's fair and accurate. don't take offense.

keep writing and i'll keep reading.

Anonymous said...

it's not an insinuation sblogger. you are more educated again to paraphrase stuff. you really need to further something inside that head of yours...

Lil' Hammerhead said...

I don't know who the author is.

To be fair, this is a rumor, true or not, that was not started on this blog. It has been out there for some time. I don't think discussing it in a forum is libellous.

Having said that.. I repeat: John has been one of the most active science/ecology/biology teachers here. He was the force behind the CNMI ecology textbook and behind the aquaculture/mariculture center. It is my opinion that John's contract should have been renewed.. and renewed and renewed.

Angelo Villagomez said...

"you really need to further something inside that head of yours..."

I don't understand what that means.

All I'm saying is that if someone posted on an online forum that I lost my job because I was drunk on the job, I'd go ape shit.

How would you like it if people dug up dirt about you?

As an attorney, I can assure you that you can sue someone for just about anything these days. Could Jon Fury sue the author of this blog for defamation of character? Yes. Would he win anything? Most likely, no.

But why would he not win, you may ask. Because Jon Fury would have to prove that it was malicious and that the allegations were entirely fabricated and have no merit. From what I have seen and heard, that would prove difficult. It was public record he was arrested for DWI. While a DWI conviction is insufficient grounds to fire an employee in most cases, there were alleged reports that he has had a drinking problem and that it may have affected his judgment and performance while working at NMC. Add to the fact that my niece attended his class while she was enrolled at Northern Marianas Academy and saw him drinking with under-age students, he could open up pandora's box and unleash many things that would better be left unsaid.

When she told me about about this incident, I was infuriated. But my niece refused to testify against him because she was frightened of the repercussions and feared her peers would turn against her. Her parents never knew about this incident because they would have immediately gone to the police, so she entrusted me with this revelation, which fortunately for him, was never pushed through legal recourse.

My niece is now a college student in the United States and with the economy the way it is with no hope of recovery, I doubt she will ever return. Did she enjoy Jon Fury's class? Yes. Did he endanger the lives of students with his drinking? Yes. Good deeds don't necessarily cancel out the bad ones.

Saipan Middle Road, I enjoy your blog and this is the first time I ever commented because I could not resist. Keep up the good work.

Thank you, Non-Shyster attorney for your unique perspective on the substance of this thread.

Also, you have provided valuable insight into why every rumored criminal violation is not prosecuted. While people of the CNMI like to spout wild conspiracy theories, the reality is usually much more prosaic -- lack of evidence.

Your post also reveals a valuable truth about civil litigation: Lawsuits are not always the solution to society's ills.

I enjoy your blog, too, Saipan Middle Road! Occasional gossip and all.

thanks non-shyster and armchair for the enlightenment on a comment...since now we have two lawyers commenting here, i hope occasional reminders from you wouldn't hurt us.

SBlogger, we don't dig dirt about people here. It's people who dig up and relay info to us. We will try to keep in mind the limitations of the First Amendment though. Thanks for commenting....

My last comment as I need to get back to my clients:

My colleague Attorney Stephen Woodruff is not a shyster, but I am sure he would not sue someone for calling him such a lewd and crude term. Frivolous lawsuits are what holds up our court systems in every place in the free world.

Attorney Woodruff is a kind and noble man. He could have easily become a real shyster by supporting the current administration's feable attempts to roadblock federalization. This so-called shyster obviously has a heart and a conscience. I have never battled him in courts or litigation fortunately, but I know enough about him to be thankful he is here in our islands protecting those less fortunate.

Angelo Villagomez said...

Is it just a rumor that you are in the CNMI on a scam sponsorship? I didn't dig that up, it has just been relayed to me.

There is a big difference in printing stories about Britney Spears and trying to spread rumors about a science teacher in a community where about 15,000 people speak English as a first language.

It is not cool.

Lil' Hammerhead said...

Isn't drinking with your College Professors part of the whole cool college experience? I couldn't tell you how many professors my husband and I along with friends had drinks with while we were "slightly" underage. There were too many. I personally learned alot just chatting with the various professors during the after-class sessions at the local bars. People take the whole drinks at 19yo thing way to far.

Note to parents: If you think your child, whose in college but underage is not drinking.. they are. And there is a good likelihood, they are imbibing large quantities. They might say they aren't.. they are.

Brad Ruszala said...

shocker, lil! oh the horror! lol. i don't know the professor in question so i can't really add anything to the fire.

Anonymous said...

now that's something else. SBLogger why don't you dig the labor for my files then and the tax office as well.

did you know that you not only threatened me with lawsuit and now spreading that i'm on a scam sponsorship? wow. now you're going to get yourself into trouble then. you and your jealous bones (so as others')

will let the company lawyer look at your statements then.

Anonymous said...

too bad you are not educated in journalism and good manners SBLogger because you are not cool with it. you don't do research. oh i forgot you quote yourself even on your own story. why don't you dig it up yourself about this issue. papers can back you up.

Jeff said...

Cmon now, Ambrose would quote himself in his own news stories with all the things he has been saying for years.

Anonymous said...

hmm...now that makes me think twice....

well not for stories written by someone else though. perhaps those PRs he submitted maybe. Still, it was published and done as PR. When someone wrote something with his byline on it, it's just ethical not to quote himself even if he or she is the president of that organization. Well, "that" story was converted to PR after all.

Angelo Villagomez said...

Well, at least you understand why people shouldn't spread rumors about you.

Maybe one of these days you'll extend that understanding to the rest of the populace.

I think it is naive to think that high school and college students do not drink.

I am not here to justify drinking with students, but it happens. If you want to talk about what is criminal, walk in to bars on the weekends. It's one thing to see a college student drinking, but a whole different thing when there are little ninth graders drinking up a storm. How did I know that? My nephew told me (he is 21 by the way but I am sure he started drinking much earlier) and pointed it out to me. It appears carding at bars is no longer done because of our poor economy. What this means is these bars that allow 14 year olds to drink are opening themselves up to potential lawsuits should they get in to an accident or get arrested. We should follow Guam and make the legal drinking age here 18 and enforce it.

When I was in high school back in the day, my senior class drank with our senior advisor and teacher. Was he reckless? We didn't think so. It wasn't about him condoning us to drink. He knew we were drinking and wanted to make sure that we weren't driving or getting in to fights or doing other stupid things teenagers tend to do. He took our keys and wouldn't give it back to us and would drive us home. We respected him like a father and drank responsibly when he was around. The times he wasn't there? Fights and teen angst and stupidity seemed to rule.

Again, I am not justifying drinking with teachers, but it is very common here. I drank with my father before I was 21. Should he have been arrested? He knew I started drinking my senior year in high school and allowed it.

It is not like Mr. Furey was pushing crack or something. It is quite ironic we make a big deal out of having a few beers with college students but not much is mentioned about the tons of money stolen from our government from scam deals.

By the way, Mr. Furey was my biology teacher back when I was in high school and I never drank with him and he never appeared to be intoxicated. He was actually a good teacher. If he drank after school, who cares? Hello? How many of us drink at the bars after work? Come on guys.

The man has kids and a wife and a family, so for their sake, be careful about what is said.

Regent Furey resigned. Case closed. Can we please move on?

Next topic please.

hey, i see high school kids at club v all the time, but they go other places too. i hear the flair has a bunch of underagers, but fake id's are cool to have when you're underage.

Lil' Hammerhead said...

Let's not forget GIG. That's what turned alot of drinking age folks off in the 90s.. the place was always full of drunk highschoolers.

I think there's a substantial difference between drinking when you're in high school and drinking when you're in college. It's a transition thing. A transition that is just too early to make when you're in high school.

And no.. not a transition from sobriety to alcoholism. In case you were going to suggest this is what I am implying.

I was just going to let this ride, but...

Do you really think it's cool to drag someone's personal life onto the internet?

Libel is not the point to me. Class, decency and humanity maybe, but not libel.

Brad Ruszala said...

lol...

Angelo Villagomez said...

This isn't the first time they have done this, either, KAP.

Angelo Villagomez said...

They do this crap to get more visits to their blog.

Lil' Hammerhead said...

It works.. we're all here.

On Saipan said...

hmmm...perhaps i should pay for the ads on Saipan Tribune website like what SBlogger did and yes have the decency to attract readers to this blog.

but what's our point to drag people reading this blog? What is also the point in attracting people to read a personal blog where one posts photos of their dogs and girlfriends? I guess it's not the point of attracting visitors to the blog nor a point whether a blog is a personal journal or not, it's the attracting the people to click on those Google Ads found in the blog that makes that other blog earn some money.

for the record this blog hasn't gotten anything from that Google Adsense. I'm surprised why can't we get the same like the other blog?

Yeah, decency and class. I got it.

Don't forget humanity.

You're blogging about a family.

SBlogger got into my nerves that i will do what i have to do and seek advice for bringing malice to my stay on Saipan.

And people, appease SBlogger and visit his blog for pete's sake. it's all jealousy and low self esteem that brought his comments.

all boils down to traffic.

please i beg you visit his blog. i think it's an animal welfare blog right now, due to the banner and starwars imitation of the logo with his dog.
